Piece rate jobs are sometimes also known as piece work. They are basically tasks that an employer sets their employee to finish for a set fee, no matter how long it takes them to do. There are both good and bad things about this type of work which mainly done from home, so lets look closer at the advantages and disadvantages of piece rate jobs!
The good thing is that this type of work can generally be done at home which means you have the freedom to have a break whenever you like or choose your working hours. If you are a fast worker, then you can earn a lot of money through piece work as it will probably take you less than the average time, meaning you can get more jobs done within a day and earn twice as much money, or even more.
The fee set is probably based upon the average worker and how long it takes them to do. If you work from home then there are no travel fees involved so you are earning more than you are spending to work. It also means you can stay at home to look after your children or do other work for different employers or even your own business. It is a great way to supplement other sources of income and you can have more than one or two jobs on the go at any one time.
You can usually also reject or accept jobs proposed to you so you are not inclined to complete everything you are given, meaning you are free to go on holiday or take a break from work without having to commit to a certain number of hours or days.
Obviously as they are given to you on an ad hoc basis, there may be times when there isn't much work on offer and you need to find an income elsewhere. In contrast to this, there may be weeks where you are flooded with work and struggling to keep on top of it all but don't want to turn any jobs down, in fear of losing out on money.
This may be quite stressful. There can be lots of scams for piece work online so its important to be wary of these. Never pay up front to receive a start up pack as this is likely to be a con and you wont see your money again.
