Change your life!
If you’re feeling unsatisfied, unfulfilled or simply bored in your day to day job, then you’re most definitely not alone, and looking to change your life will be ranked highly on your to do list. Everyone’s heard about the ‘Best Job in the World,’ a cleverly advertised caretaker position by Tourism Queensland for one lucky person to simply enjoy life on an Australian Island and report it to the world via a blog. However unattainable this sort of career may appear to the average person, many people do have a mini-crisis akin to the mid-life crisis whereby their daily job has become just too much!
It’s no surprise a study by the
Metro found that us Brits were amongst the top whingers in the world concerning wages and working hours. But what are the options available to you to effect a change?
We explore a few alternatives that may change your life forever, from the more realistic to the more extreme.
Idea Number 1 - Get Promoted
We’re taking this life-change idea one step at a time. So if you’ve bored yourself and all those around you with your moaning; “I hate my job,” “I want a better job,” “I hate my boss,” or even “my boss hates me,” then consider this - maybe all the perks go with the power! Maybe you in your newly promoted position could make all the changes the company needs to be a great place, and your boss is suddenly no longer your boss, but an equal, much more manageable than their previous exertion of power all over you allowed them to be! Here are a few steps on ‘how to get promoted’, not all are officially recommended but all of which may actually work!
Identify the person who can help you achieve this – this is easy and if you can’t do this then resign yourself to your life of mediocrity!
Be an ideas person – People at the top of the career ladder need to make decisions and show initiative as there’s no one telling them what to do. Show everyone you can do this by displaying creative flair or cost/time saving initiatives.
Don’t wait to be selected, consistently put yourself forward – You do not have to get the first promotion you go for but it all gets you time in the boss’s office and lets them know you’re ambitious.
Work in your own time and get some extra qualifications – again it’s showing ambition, but this will also make you better at your job and also help out with idea 2 if idea 1 fails.
Or …. become chummy with the big cheese, maybe it really is not what you know, but who you know. Get creative; register at his golf course, sign up at his gym, become a part of this guys life. How committed are you?? Or maybe you’re missing an obvious angle, how well could you and her/him get on? Making it into their bedroom might actually help you make it into your new office!
Idea Number 2 - Drastic Change in Your Career
Moving up the ladder may not be enough for you, changing career will change everything from the people you work with and the building you work in to the work you do. The commitment level just went up though. Will you have to take a pay cut, will you have to go back into education, will you even have to move? Start thinking of the long term gain though, there may be better future pay prospects, you’ll be doing something you enjoy and you’ll have a new skill set. The internet is abundant with career changing information, starting with DirectGov will get things moving.
Have your own brainstorm with a pen and paper though, lets not forget that people are paid as crocodile wranglers, chicken sexers and furniture testers!
Idea Number 3 - Set up Your Own Business/Work from Home
Working from home is becoming a revolution for current generations with our technologically superior levels to our parents. There are many work from home jobs out there so thinking where to start is going to be tough. What you do know is you’ll be your own boss, have power over when you take your breaks, never queue to make tea/coffee again, and enjoy all profits made for yourself.
The internet will in most cases be vital to your efforts to work from home. You may consider setting up your own business or becoming a freelancer according to your skills. The internet will help you market yourself, so create a website, invest in it, register yourself in directories and networking sites and get yourself known!
This suits work at home mums or dads in particular as it gives you more time with the kids. But it also gives you creative freedom, if you’re looking for a lifestyle and career change, doing what you want from home is the best place to be.
Paying the bills is likely to be top of your list of concerns. Whilst you or your business may be establishing itself think about ways to earn cash in your spare time. Filling out surveys for money, attending focus groups, testing products or completing freelance work such as article writing can all help pay for the weekly shopping or the monthly bills.
Idea Number 4 - Find Your Dream Job
We’ve arrived at the final idea, requiring the biggest sacrifices, the boldest actions and perhaps an unusual dose of good luck. The above ideas all help you find a great job, but lets reserve the title ‘dream job’ for the elite professions that are envied by all. We’re excluding professional sports as unless you’re an unusually ambitious and internet savvy 5 year old this article has probably reached you too late in your life.
Reconnect with the child in you, what would a five year old ‘you’ say to sort your life out? Is being a pilot or SAS member out of your reach? Or are you looking to get extreme? Lion taming and monster truck driving are known to pay the bills in some places around the world!
Or …. move abroad – sack it all in and go to another country! Filing accounts in Slough is going to be top of no ones list, but pulling pints in Tahiti is definitely going to enhance your facebook photo tags. Working in the tourist trade in the world’s best locations definitely goes down as a dream job, so will you open your own bar on a beach in Australia or buy a boat and sail people around the carribean?
Finally, rule them all! Find a way into politics and get people voting. No one will be above you with prime minister or president written on your door placard. As we said, the title ‘dream job’ needs to be reserved for the elite!
