Working from home has become an option for many people. It is an increasing trend with the emergence of new technology and the opportunities created by the internet. Some people run their own business from home, some do part-time work from home and others are employed but work remotely from home. Regardless of your situation, you should follow some basic rules.
Devise a plan for your work. You should set daily and weekly goals. Sometimes you cannot complete your daily tasks on the same day but you should aim to complete all of the tasks by the end of the week. Without a plan, you are planning to fail.
If you are working from home, you essentially become your own boss. You must take full responsibility for anything that goes wrong and in the same way can take all the credit for any success. Nothing will happen unless you make it happen and this should help keep you motivated.
Try to maintain a similar pattern as you would do when working in an office. Try to start and finish work at regular office hours and have an hour lunch break. It is easy to get absorbed and work really late and skip meals, so try avoiding this. Also, it is sensible to work the weekdays and take the weekend off.
You should take breaks at regular intervals. This will help to keep you fresh and focused. Sometimes, you should leave the room you are working in and go for a short walk.
Try to mix up your place of work. Sometimes you can go to a local internet café or coffee shop and work there for a few hours. Nowadays, most coffee shops will have WiFi so take advantage of it.
Create your own personal working space and do not use it for other purposes. If you have a spare room then that is a great dedicated space. If you work from your bedroom then separate the working and sleeping areas.
Do not just take the whole day off if you have to run a few errands. Try to get some work done in the morning and then do what you need to do. It is important to take time off but plan it and make sure you have completed important tasks first.
Make some rules and follow them. Do not turn on the television or have other forms of background distraction.
Develop a support network. Try to find people who are in a similar situation to you, working from home, and keep connected with them. This is mutually beneficial because working from home can get quite lonely and you will be able to help each other overcome problems.
